How 3D printing works: from a digital model to a figurine
Published 29 October 2026
Short answer: 3D printing (additive manufacturing) builds an object one thin layer at a time from a digital 3D model. At Printini, a printer melts PLA or PLA+ plastic and lays it down through a fine nozzle, layer after layer, until the figurine or object is complete.
1. The digital model
Every print starts as a 3D model: designed from scratch, adapted from a character, or built from your photo for a custom figurine.
2. Slicing
Software cuts the model into hundreds of thin horizontal layers and plans the path of the nozzle for each one. Thinner layers give a smoother surface but take longer to print.
3. Printing
The printer heats the plastic filament and deposits it layer by layer. Overhanging parts, such as an arm or a sword, get temporary supports that are removed afterwards.
4. Finishing
Supports are removed and the print is cleaned up. Some figurines are then primed (ready to paint) or hand-painted.
Why PLA?
PLA and PLA+ are strong, light plastics that hold fine detail well, which makes them a good fit for figurines, keychains, stands and décor.
